MARRIOTT WAIOHAI KEEPS ITS COOL
When Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club on Kauai opened in 2003, management quickly learned that the island had the highest utility rates in the country, and kilowatt costs were still rising.
“Almost every property on the island has had to install some type of energy management system in order to combat the rising utility costs here,” says Peter Villatora, director of facilities at the 231-unit timeshare resort. “We knew we had to find the most efficient and cost-effective energy management system on the market to help us meet our objectives.”
The resort conducted side-by-side tests of three products to measure energy cost savings as well as the ease of use for guests and maintenance staff of each system.
As a result of the tests, the resort installed the Onity SensorStat DDC II digital thermostat in all 231 two-bedroom villas. Sensors were also installed on all guest-room doors and balcony access doors, so the AC automatically shuts off when doors are left open for a period of time. Since installation, HVAC kilowatt consumption has been reduced by 20-30 percent, and the Onity system has already nearly paid for itself.
“What really set the Onity system apart was the projected ROI,” says Villatora. “Although other systems came close to generating the level of energy savings that Onity provided, they were much more expensive initially. The Onity SensorStat system offered an ideal combination of simplicity, efficiency and value, with an excellent payback period. We also liked the way the PIR (passive infrared) occupancy sensor was incorporated directly into the digital thermostat, which made installation very simple. The other systems were more complicated to install and operate.”
