Lights Out for Fluorescents
Fluorescent lamps are great — until it's time to throw them away. For a safe method of disposing of fluorescent lamps at more than 500 hotels, Marriott chose Air Cycle Corp., developer of the EasyPak Recycling Program and the Bulb Eater.
“We believe Air Cycle offers our hotels an easier and more eco-friendly option to dispose of fluorescent bulbs,” says Paul Hildreth, project director of engineering at Marriott International. “It's a great solution for hotels in states where regulations are continuously evolving to meet environmental demands.”
Several Marriott hotels are equipped with the OSHA- and EPA-compliant Bulb Eater. The device crushes more than 1,000 fluorescent lamps (depending on lamp size) and packs them into a 55-gallon drum. The fully enclosed and filtered process contains the glass, aluminum and harmful mercury vapors. Full drums are then sealed and shipped by FedEx Ground to an EPA-approved lamp-recycling facility. Air Cycle makes the disposal arrangements for the hotels.
Air Cycle also certifies the materials have been handled by approved recycling facilities. The service helps Marriott remain compliant in all 50 states where recycling standards and regulations vary.
Marriott hopes to decrease its environmental footprint by one million tons between 2000 and 2010. Circle 100
