JOE KANE'S LEGACY
In an industry filled with straight shooters and quality people, none of them surpass Joe Kane in integrity. The long-time Wyndham Hotel Group (and Cendant before that) executive and Days Inn President retired from the firm last month.
Kane left on a high note, as he and other Days officials rolled out a new logo for the brand at its recent franchisee conference. The new symbol is an update of the brand's original logo of 37 years ago. It features a more modern typeface and a deep blue background in contrast to the iconic yellow sunburst. As a cost-saver for franchisees, the new logo will fit over existing signage.
The Days Inn brand was in a slump when Kane assumed its presidency 11 years ago. Since then, it has grown to nearly 1,900 properties and 150,000 rooms on five continents. Three years ago, the chain launched a product and service renaissance program that included new standards, upgraded breakfast and amenities programs, new bedding and free high-speed Internet service.
“During my time with Days Inn I feel most proud that the franchisees trusted me to look after their interests and the interests of their guests,” says Kane. “Sometimes that meant having to make the tough call, but it was always done with the good of the system and franchisees in mind.”
Kane will continue to consult for Wyndham on a part-time basis. He'll also remain active in the AH&LA, which he led as chairman last year. In addition, he'll lecture at hotel schools and he's working on a business book.
Wyndham executive Ken Greene succeeds Kane as group president overseeing the Days, Howard Johnson and Travelodge groups. Another longtime Wyndham and Cendant executive, Bob Weller, also retired recently. Before joining Wyndham's predecessor company, Weller and Kane worked together at Econo Lodges of America.
