Marriott LEEDs the Way in Green Design

The Inn and Conference Center by Marriott at the University of Maryland was the first, but it won’t be the company’s last property to be LEED-certified. Marriott says it has more than 30 hotels in design, development or under construction that will meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council. Marriott is also pursuing LEED-Existing Building status for its headquarters in Bethesda, MD.

The Fairfield Inn & Suites near the Inner Harbor in downtown Baltimore opens in July and expects to achieve LEED-Silver status. Among its green features, the hotel will offer eco-suites, bicycle storage and changing rooms and preferred parking for fuel-efficient vehicles. The breakfast area features solar tracking lights, and the outdoor courtyard includes turf made of recycled tires and rainwater cisterns made from brewing barrels from Baltimore Brewing Co., the site’s original occupant.

Other Marriott LEED-certified hotels expected to open this year include a Ritz-Carlton at Lake Tahoe, CA; a Residence Inn in Arlington, VA; and Courtyards in Chevy Chase, MD, Portland, OR and Pittsburgh.

Next year, LEED properties to open include a Renaissance and Residence Inn in suburban Washington, DC; the Atlanta Airport Marriott-Gateway; and a JW Marriott and a Ritz-Carlton in downtown Los Angeles in the L.A. LIVE mixed-use development.

To achieve LEED certification at its headquarters, the company says it’s diverting 64 percent of the building’s total waste, switching to biodegradable disposable containers in the cafeteria and then migrating to all permanent ware and converting used cooking oil into biodiesel fuel. It has also partnered with Connect by Hertz, a car-sharing program that provides four eco-cars at Marriott headquarters employees can rent at any time of day or night to run errands or go to off-site meetings.
