Community Energy will supply wind-generated power to Sofitel Hotels in an agreement with Sofitel parent Accor North America. The deal calls for the nine Sofitels in the U.S. to purchase wind-generated power in the form of renewable energy certificates (RECs).
The pact makes Sofitel Hotels an Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partner and the first hotel chain to choose green power for all of its U.S. locations. These Sofitels will buy a total of 1.527 million kilowatt hours (kWHs) of renewable energy, offsetting about two million pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
According to Accor, the impact of that offset is equal to planting more than 800 acres of trees a year or not driving 2.36 million miles.
Sofitel also has taken steps to reduce water and energy usage via ozone laundry systems. In September, the Sofitel San Francisco Bay was honored as 2007 Customer of the Year for being the first to collaborate with Redwood City, CA on its recycled water project.
