FREEING UP THE BATHROOM FIXTURES
When Cambridge Seven Associates took on transformation of the former Charles Street Jail in Boston to the Liberty Hotel, it had to consider everything from preservation of the central atrium to conversion of the former exercise yard to a landscaped courtyard.
A special focus for the luxury property: the bathrooms. Helping make the Liberty Hotel's bathroom fixtures just right was Symmons Industries, working closely with plumbing contractor E.M. Duggan.
The Liberty Hotel is a reimagining of the Charles Street Jail, an 1851 structure in the “Boston Granite” style. It opened last August as a 300-room upscale hotel. The bathrooms, which are key to the guest experience, feature custom fittings. But those didn't come at custom cost; Cambridge Seven senior associate Jim Puopolo credits Duggan and Symmons Industries' Design Studio for that highly designed, cost-efficient solution.
Design Studio uses specialized, open-source software to enable Symmons designers to turn an initial concept into a 3-D plastic prototype in as little as four days. That gave Cambridge Seven the flexibility to create unique bathroom fittings, down to the mixing valve and the cleverly placed hot-water stop.
Not only did Symmons translate input from multiple sources into one effective concept, it did so at an affordable price, Puopolo says.
“Everyone had some idea of how the fittings should look — us, the general contractor, the plumbing contractor and the owner,” he says. “It couldn't have been easy to incorporate everyone's thoughts, but Symmons managed to do it. The second we looked at the prototype design, we were happy.” Circle 100
