The historic Greenbrier resort in White Springs, VA is undergoing a $50-million renovation. As part of that, guestrooms are being equipped with new Panasonic widescreen, high-contrast plasma displays. “We view plasma TVs as the ultimate in-room amenity, especially for a clientele increasingly sophisticated about viewing options,” says Ted Horan, director of operations.

The Greenbrier's purchase comprised 650 37-inch and 50 42-inch plasma displays as well as 700 plug-in tuner boards (with Smart-Plug capability) compatible with the resort's existing LodgeNet pay-per-view system.

Director of Purchasing Dan Bird identifies the appeal of the Panasonic plasmas as both technical and aesthetic. “The 37-inch plasma is tailor-made for our hundreds of standard rooms,” explains Bird. “The speakers-on-the-bottom design, facilitating the placement of larger displays in a smaller space, means we can make use of our existing armoires. The resort entertains many families with small children, so we preferred the hard, scratch-resistant glass surface of the plasmas.

“Panasonic's innovations include picture-enhancing technologies that produce deep, rich blacks,” continues Bird. “The display's wide viewing angle produces images that look the same throughout the room, again being distinct from LCDs.”

The Greenbrier is installing the 42-inch plasmas in the resort's suites and estate houses, where the displays will rest on stands placed atop dressers.

Key benefits of these models include: exceptional brightness even in bright rooms; an ultra-compact design with the speakers positioned under the screen; an ultra-wide viewing angle; a durable, “child-friendly” surface; and the flexibility of a multi-function slot architecture for adding connectivity options and features, including a tuner board compatible with the major in-room pay-per- view systems.
