Silent Knight Secures Staybridge

The Staybridge Suites-Cleveland East, a three-story, 123-unit property in suburban Cleveland, is doing well. Until recently, however, the direction of its fire protection system was an issue. Literally.

“The majority of fire protection systems are installed horizontally,” says Dan Klag, owner and president of Cleveland-based Life Safety Systems, which, with engineering firm Thorson Baker, helped design the property's system. “Due to the nature of the hotel's construction, we were unable to use horizontal conduits. So instead of horizontal-type rungs of cabling, we used vertical risers as the backbone of the system's piping.” They also trimmed labor and material costs.

Klag recommended a system from Silent Knight, part of the Honeywell Life Safety group. He knew that system well.

“Before I founded Life Safety Systems, I was with a local electrical contractor, where I developed a technologies division,” says Klag. “While I was with this division, which specialized in fire protection systems, I became familiar with Silent Knight, particularly its Farenhyt product line.”

With more than 1,000 addressable points, the Farenhyt IFP-1000 Analog/Addressable Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) is ideal for mid- to large-sized institutions like hotels, Klag says.

Staybridge representatives requested certain modifications to the system, necessitated by Staybridge's own stringent fire safety standards.

State code did not require smoke detection capabilities in the corridors of buildings equipped with sprinklers, Klag says. But Staybridge did, and the property owners complied. Further modifications followed, facilitated by the system's flexibility. “Almost anything that is asked of us can be accomplished with the core system we have in place,” Klag says.

“We put together a design that would trim installation cost and time, based on the vertical configuration,” he adds. “But without a product that could accommodate this design — a product that would help the owners achieve total code compliance — it would have all been for nothing.” Circle 100
