Lodging Vet Pens Hotel Novel
Some people pay tribute to respected colleagues through a gift or a kind word. Veteran hotel industry executive Greg Plank chose to do it in writing. The former president of Suburban Lodges and current industry consultant recently released “Saving The Saint George,” a 243-page novel chronicling the fictional Hotel Saint George and its owners, employees and guests. The twist is that many of the characters in the book mirror those in the industry Plank has worked with in his nearly 40 years in the business.
“It's my way of honoring all the great people I've known and worked with throughout my career in this great business,” says Plank, who's now president of Worldwide Team Management, an Atlanta-based consulting firm. “Most of the characters are composites of a number of people. It's fun for readers to figure who's who.”
Plank, who says he finds writing cathartic, actually started the book in the 1970s but put it aside until about four years ago. Even though he's a well-respected hotel marketing and franchising expert, he began his career writing copy for an ad agency.
A sequel will be released shortly, says Plank.
