Pearl of a Restaurant
Surrounded by a coral reef and protected by clear acrylic, guests of the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa can enjoy Ithaa, the first undersea restaurant in the world.
Ithaa, which is pronounced “eet-ha,“ means “pearl“ in Dhivehi, the Maldives language. It sits five meters beneath the Indian Ocean. It offers diners 270 degrees of panoramic underwater views.
Created by New Zealand-based design consultancy MJ Murphy Ltd., Ithaa uses curved transparent acrylic walls and roof, similar to those used in aquarium attractions. Ithaa is part of a $5-million reconstruction of Rangalifinolhu Island, one of twin islands that make up the Hilton resort.
