In 2006, VingCard introduced Signature RFID/NFC by VingCard^®, a contactless electronic locking solution featuring Near Field Communications (NFC) cell phone compatibility, allowing hotel guests to use their NFC cell phones to open guestroom doors — and allowing hoteliers to get more with contactless.

Signature RFID/NFC is an open-platform system compatible with the three leading RFID ISO standards (ISO 14443A/MiFare, ISO 14443B, ISO 15693), and also the new NFC secure transaction platform.

Prior to arrival at a hotel, guests receive a booking confirmation number, room number and encrypted room key access code through Short Message System (SMS), allowing them to skip the check-in line upon arrival and go straight to the room, where their NFC cell phones will unlock the door.

In addition to its remote check-in capabilities, Signature RFID/NFC also offers a unique contactless design for more intuitive guest interaction. Equipped with anti-cloning technology for all keycards, Signature RFID/NFC provides unsurpassed security to hotels because, unlike mag-stripe technology, it is impossible for RFID keycards to be cloned and used.

In April 2008, Signature RFID/NFC was named “Best NFC Service of the Year 2008” by the NFC Forum, a non-profit industry association dedicated to advancing the use of NFC technology.

Placing first in the prestigious NFC Forum Global Competition, which promotes the development and deployment of innovative and exemplary NFC services, provides further testament to VingCard's inventive use of NFC technology. Participating in the Commercial Track of the competition, Signature RFID/NFC beat out 20 finalists chosen from more than 50 entries from 21 countries to secure the top honor.

In the current North American hospitality market, an estimated 18 million plastic keycards are discarded by hotels and their guests every week. Additionally, experts say the industry could save as many as nine million batteries each year by switching to more energy efficient locking systems. With this in mind, VingCard encourages hoteliers to choose Signature RFID/NFC in an effort to go “green.”

Not only does Signature RFID/NFC operate on fewer batteries than traditional electronic locks, but its NFC cell phone compatibility also gives hoteliers the option to forgo keycards altogether.
