Galveston Hotels Are Back in Business

Article Tools

The Hotel Galvez, A Wyndham Historic Hotel, is among the hospitality properties on Galveston Island, TX returning to business following cleanup from last month’s Hurricane Ike. The 97-year-old hotel, which sustained minimal damage from the storm, will begin accepting guests on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Its Bernardo’s Restaurant opened on Oct. 1 and resumed brunch service on Oct. 5.

Similarly, the Seaside Resort, a Silverleaf Resorts timeshare property, will partially open on Friday, Oct. 17, with a full opening scheduled by the end of November. The property suffered ground-level flooding, as well as exterior and interior wind and rain damage.

A group of Galveston businessmen raised $1 million to build the Galvez following a deadly hurricane that ravaged the island in 1900. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. Local preservationists Cynthia and George Mitchell own the Galvez as part of their Mitchell Historic Properties.
