Familiar Names Top J.D. Power Study
Several familiar brands once again topped the J.D. Power and Associates' guest satisfaction survey released last week.
Ritz-Carlton (luxury), Embassy Suites (upscale) and Homewood Suites (extended stay) took top honors in their segments for the second consecutive year, while Hyatt Place was at the top in mid-scale full service. Drury Inn & Suites led in mid-scale limited service for the third straight year and Microtel Inns & Suites topped economy/budget for the seventh straight year.
The 2008 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study, which is in its 12th year, measures guest satisfaction across the six segments.
Four of the six segments as a whole declined in overall satisfaction compared to last year, with the economy/budget segment posting the largest decrease since the study began. The two segments not to drop were luxury and extended stay, which perhaps explains, at least partially, why the others fell.
As the economy continues to falter, consumers are likely trading down. Several studies have indicated Americans will do everything possible to avoid cutting travel and vacations. They may not be going as far, for as long or staying at as expensive places, but they're still going.
Someone who usually stays at a luxury hotel may save a few bucks by dropping down to an upscale location. Someone who usually stays at a mid-scale property may move down to the economy level. It stands to reason, as consumers trade down, their expectations remain the same.
Hotels that can best meet the rising expectations will
probably top next year's study.
