Wyndham Grabs Half of Dirtiest Hotels List

Hotel Carter in New York City's Times Square topped the one list you don't want to top--for the third time in four years!--and Wyndham Hotel Group placed five properties on TripAdvisor's top 10 filthiest hotels rankings. TripAdvisor used ratings and reviews from its vast online travel community to compile the list.

The results were not good for Wyndham. The Days Inn Cleveland Airport was the company's highest—or worst--placer at No. 5, followed by the Days Inn Airport/Stadium in Tampa (No. 6), the Travelodge Bangor in Maine (7th), the Ramada Plaza Hotel JFK International Airport in Jamaica, NY (9th) and the Days Inn & Suites Gatlinburg in Tennessee (10th). “I wouldn't put my worst enemy in this filthy motel,” one reviewer said of the Tampa Days Inn. The offending hotels will get a closer look from the corporate office.

“We inspect each of the hotels in our system at least once a year to ensure they meet our exacting quality and service standards,” Christine Da Silva, director, media relations for Wyndham Hotel Group, said in an email response. “When a hotel fails to meet those standards, we notify the owner that specific actions must be taken within a specific amount of time to address its deficiencies. Hotels that make a good-faith effort to resolve their problems may be given time extensions to comply. Hotels that fail to resolve deficiencies are subject to termination from our system. We are re-evaluating the properties mentioned in the TripAdvisor list to assess the situation at those hotels.”

Hotel Carter--”I think it would have been cleaner to sleep on the street,” one reviewer said--features more than 700 rooms on W. 43rd St. Rates, not surprisingly, are extremely low (under $100 at times) for such a prime location in Manhattan's Theatre District. The rest of the top 10 included: the Continental Bayside Hotel in Miami Beach (No. 2), the New York Inn in Midtown (3rd), the Eden Roc Motel in Wildwood, NJ (4th) and the Velda Rose Resort Hotel in Hot Springs, AR (8th).

“We're running out of new ways to describe the Hotel Carter and other culprits on this list,” said Michele Perry, vice president of global communications for TripAdvisor. “Fortunately, our millions of travelers have not, and have plenty of dirty laundry to air about these disturbingly offensive hotels.”
