Wyndham Worldwide Corporation completed its purchase of U.S. Franchise Systems, Inc. from a subsidiary of Global Hyatt Corporation Monday for $131 million.
Wyndham now has a dozen brands with nearly 7,000 hotels on six continents with the addition of the Microtel Inns & Suites and Hawthorn Suites brands. Microtel is a chain of 298 all-new-construction economy hotels with 35 more under construction, while Hawthorn Suites is a chain of 91 extended-stay hotels.
Wyndham chairman and CEO Stephen P. Holmes says the acquisition "is a great fit for Wyndham Worldwide. It further leverages our franchise systems, gives us more avenues to grow domestically and internationally, and advances our strategic goal of growing Wyndham Hotel Group's contribution to our overall profitability."
Hawthorn provides Wyndham with an entry into the burgeoning extended-stay segment, while Microtel provides another bonus: "We are eager to share best practices" with Microtel, says Wyndham Hotel Group President Steven A. Rudnitsky of the brand that has been ranked No. 1 in guest satisfaction in its segment by J.D. Power and Associates the past six years. "The brands will be integrated while preserving the culture, systems and philosophies on which they were established and built."
Roy E. Flora, executive vice president and COO of USFS,
says he looks "forward to leading the continued growth and success of our
brands."
