FITNESS CRAZE SWEEPS HOTELS
Westin, Hilton and Marriott are trumpeting fitness, launching wellness and health pro- grams in new, stand-alone facilities and, in Hilton and Marriott's case, the guestroom. The efforts involve co-branding and, at Hilton, personal trainers.
Westin Hotels & Resorts spent $12 million to build WestinWORKOUT Powered by Reebok facilities in 53 hotels in North America, Mexico and the Caribbean and plans to open 40 in Europe and Asia this year. Starting this month, Hilton Hotels & Resorts debuted an alliance with Bally Total Fitness that provides more than 5,000 personal trainers to guests of its North American hotels.
Hilton also is offering complimentary in-room “mini gyms” including yoga mats, resistance tubing and hand weights. These also were developed by Bally.
Marriott's Great Health-Fit for You offers complimentary, in-room fitness options including the BodyRev, the BodyWedge, and Michael Sena's Traveling Trainer. Launched in late January, Great Health aims to align with Marriott's Fit for You culinary program under the umbrella update, The New Look and Feel of Marriott Now, a brand evolution emphasizing innovation.
Inspired by upscale health clubs, Westin's fitness rooms feature treadmills, upright bikes, recumbent bikes, steppers, free weights and Cardio Theater viewing screens and sound equipment.
The Hilton-Bally alliance stems from a study by the former director of NASA's Fatigue Countermeasures program that found that people who exercise while traveling performed 61-percent better than non-exercisers on alertness and reaction tests.
Created by former Navy SEAL and professional trainer Alden Mills, Marriott's BodyRev is a portable exercise device and video routine that uses natural body movements to deliver an aerobic and strength-training workout in 15 minutes.
