Behind the Scenes April 2011
MOVIES RULE
Despite the buzz about new forms of in-room entertainment, hotel guests still live movies, at least according to an HBO survey. The entertainment provider says 84% of hotel guests in rooms with HBO watch movies. Original comedy and drama series are next in popularity, watched by 76% of guests. Speaking of movies, LodgeNet says The Blind Side was the top-selling on-demand theatrical movie title in hotel guestrooms in 2010.
TRAVELING AMENITY
Peninsula Hotels in New York and Chicago offer the perfect amenity for congested cities: two chauffeur-driven Mini Cooper S Clubmen vehicles suite-level guests can use up to three hours a day for shopping, excursions and tours around the city.
LEEDING THE WAY
L.A. Live, including the 123-room Ritz-Carlton and the 878-room JW Marriott, recently earned LEED Silver certification. Gensler designed the 52-floor mixed-use tower. The 550-room InterContinental San Francisco also recently earned LEED Gold, and the Cavallo Point Lodge in San Francisco became the first LEED Gold certified national park lodge.
FARM TO TABLE
The Hermitage Hotel in Nashville has a unique arrangement to provide farm-to-table dining options at its four-star Capitol Grille. The hotel has planted heirloom vegetables on one acre of an historic farm five miles away through an arrangement with the Land Trust for Tennessee. Guests of the historic 100-year-old hotel have the option of donating $2 per night to the Land Trust and more than $100,000 has been raised since the program began in July 2008.
