Wireless high-speed Internet access is becoming fairly commonplace in hotels. But wireless electrical power for the devices so many travelers bring with them is something new. It will soon be available at the Loews Regency in New York.

At the Regency's business center, Powermat technology will transmit wireless electrical power to laptops, cell phones and personal digital assistants without the need to access multiple outlets or docking stations.

Powermat plans to design and construct a wire-free solution, including installation of portable computers and other electronic devices, for the center. It should be operational by early fall.

Based on principles of magnetic induction, Powermat's integrated solution transmits electrical power via an ultra-thin mat embedded in, or laid over, a work surface or wall to electronic devices randomly placed on the power mat.

The aesthetically oriented solution enables an individual to travel without a charger and draw power to operate devices, rendering wires obsolete at the same time it is preserving batteries. Powermat was established in Israel in spring 2006.
