Hotels Turn to iPad Apps
iPhone apps are so yesterday. Today, many hotel chains, individual properties and other lodging industry companies are launching applications for Apple’s hot iPad device, of which nearly 14 million have been sold since its launch in April.
In many cases, the iPads applications are adaptations of existing apps for iPhones, BlackBerrys and other smartphones. Some hotels are also providing the devices for guest use in suites, concierge lounges, f&b outlets or meeting facilities.
At the recently renovated Westin New York at Times Square, guests staying in its 126 Atrium Club Rooms can use iPads in the Atrium Club Lounge. And early last month, the hotel launched an iPad app that includes standard info about the hotel—rooms, f&b facilities, services, local Times Square attractions—as well as a lushly produced video showcasing the hotel and the ability to make reservations.
Other hotels and chains are dabbling in the world of iPads:
• All guestrooms in The Plaza Hotel in New York City are equipped with iPads loaded with a concierge application that gives hotel info but also allows guests to order roomservice, make restaurant reservations, request wake-up calls and explore the neighborhood. The devices are also pre-loaded with newspaper and other media content.
• In Orlando, the Walt Disney World Magic Vacation Mirror is an iPad app that’s an interactive brochure for the resort’s theme parks and hotels. Hosted by Disney character Tinker Bell, the app includes photos, videos and 360-degree images of the park and its attractions.
• The White Lodging-operated Westin Austin (TX) at the Domain is device-agnostic when it comes to its electronic concierge application. The property, which opened in March, developed a 3G system that operates on smartphones as well as the iPad. Guests can tap into the hotel’s wireless network and use the app for a variety of services—everything from ordering a drink at poolside to requesting their car from the valet.
• Southern California’s Shutters on the Beach provides fully loaded, WiFi-enabled iPads to guests staying in its Premier suites. The fully featured devices provide concierge services (roomservice, spa appointments, etc.), a selection of movies and music, access to Kindle accounts and a variety of media apps (CNN, SportsCenter, etc.)
