Yeah, We've Got an App for That
Like most other businesses, the hotel industry has jumped on the iPhone craze. As a result, a number of hotel companies and technology providers have introduced applications built for the Apple device, as well as other smartphones:
Hampton Inn partnered with MapQuest so the chain's properties can be quickly displayed on the service's iPhone application website. The app is free and is available at www.wireless.mapquest.com.
Software provider MTech created a mobile product for the Gaylord Opryland that allows customer service agents to quickly check guests into rooms. REX, MTech's Room Expeditor service, works on the iPhone and iPod touch platforms.
Working with the hotel and IT schools at Florida State University, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin resorts developed an iPhone app that gives guests in-depth information about the resorts on their handheld devices.
The Wyndham Hotel Group created mobile websites for all 10 of its brands. The sites, which can be used with iPhones and Blackberry Curves, have nearly all of the same functionality as each brand's full-scale websites.
At HITEC in June, several exhibitors debuted iPhone-powered applications. MSI showed a system that allows hotel managers to access real-time property operating stats, while Hotel SalesPro had an app that provides sales people with real-time access to their properties' sales and catering systems through handheld devices.
Choice Hotels was the first U.S. hotel company to widely embrace iPhone technology. In April, the Silver Spring, MD-based franchisor of 11 hotel brands launched a free mobile reservatations application that allows iPhone users to book Choice rooms through a wireless version of ChoiceHotels.com.
The Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions offers a mobile site that gives visitors information about the city of Amsterdam. It includes images and info on hotels, museums, restaurants, bars, shopping and attractions.
