Court Closes Door on Motel Robbery Lawsuit
The South Carolina State Supreme Court says motels are not required to be impenetrable fortresses.
The court has unanimously upheld a Court of Appeals ruling that while motel owners should provide reasonable security, there was no evidence the Super 8 motel on John C. Calhoun Drive was at fault when a patron was shot. The case stems from a Sept. 28, 1999 incident in which motel guest Gerald Bass was shot in the leg as he was staying at the Super 8.
